The oldest Bulgarian winter resort is Borovets with a history dating back to 1896. Today Borovets is the biggest and most modern resort in Bulgaria. It is a summer and winter resort, but mostly winter. Snow-capped peaks at winter and soft green slopes at summer, thick forests and wild fruit, quick-flowing rivers and blue lakes, rare plants and herbs are all parts of Borovets. It is situated on the Northern slopes of the Mousala ridge in the Eastern part of Rila. It is approximately one hour drive from Sofia (70km), in the Rila mountain, at approximately 1300m above sea level. The town of Samokov is only 9 km down the road from the resort. Borovets has quite a few hotels and private villas turned into hotels for the winter. Borovets is a resort of Alpine type and provides very good conditions for snow sports during the winter: skiing, night- skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ski jumps and biathlon, etc.
The property market in Borovets is not so well developed compared to Bansko or Pamporovo ski resorts, but the investment interests in the area is growing, which will lead to the increase of the prices of the properties offered for sale in Borovets and the near-by villages. Prices of property in Borovets vary depending on their distance to the ski lifts and the available facilities. There will be a golf course in the town of Dolna Banya, which is a well known spa center less than 20km away, so the property prices will most likely continue the upward trend.
