The silhouette of the monument can be seen from a distance between 20 and 30 kilometers. Thus it is linked with ancient capitals Pliska and Preslav. The Madara horseman is situated in Madara Archaeological Reserve, located 1.5 km. to the east from Madara, Shumen. The unique relief Horseman is under the auspices of UNESCO. The unique rock relief of Madara horseman symbolizes the power of the Bulgarian State from its khan period. It was hewn at 23 m. from the base of a vertical rock. In natural size are portrayed a horseman, a limped dog, which follows him, and a pierced with pike lion, which lies at the horse's legs. This composition symbolizes the victory. The image reminds of the triumphal scenes and the antique art traditions. The details determine the period and support the thesis for the proto - Bulgaria origin of the relief. The scientists suggest that Madara Horseman portrays khan Tervel as a victor.
